You can cross-country or snowshoe right from your door at the Pioneer. We are also only 1/2 mile from the Walrod winter trailhead and 1 1/2 miles from the Cement Creek winter trailhead. There is something really special about being able to walk out of your cabin, throw on your snowshoes or skis and explore a snow covered valley amongst towering douglas firs. There are nice trails for the first timers who want to explore with their family on the valley floor. For the adventurous and those experienced with avalanche safety, you may want to try to climb Cement Mountain and find the old Pioneer Ski Hut.
The Pioneer now rents Atlas 12 series snowshoes right here. $10/day per person for rentals.
There are also many different winter trailheads just a short drive from the Pioneer that are great for skiing or snowshoeing. Our favorites are the Slate River Valley, Brush Creek, Washington Gulch and Gothic. We also recommend a trip down to the Mill Creek Valley by Gunnison which is a special treat and well-worth drive on a sunny day.
