Weather & Seasons in Crested Butte

We get asked all the time about the weather. In general, Colorado is famous for its spectacular weather. We have written some general descriptions below but in the mountains you never really know what you are going to get. We've seen it snow in August and we've seen in rain in January but it's more likely to be like we have described below.

Summer:
Summer is the busiest time of the year in Crested Butte. Why? Simply, because it is amazing. June is one of the driest months of the year with long sunny days. The typical July, August day is sunny in the morning high around 75, a quick thunderstorm in the afternoon and cool and clear at night. The wildflowers start coming up in late April and bloom in the higher terrain well into August. Late August the mushrooms start coming up and you start to see a little hint of yellow in the Aspens. Autumn:

Autumn comes early in the mountains and is a lovely time to be here. It's our favorite time of year. Temps are generally 60's during the day and cool to cold at night. In general, September and October are dry and sunny with the occasional storm that brings rain to the valley floors and blesses the high peaks with snow. This is the most popular time of year for photographers to come to Crested Butte as the mix of yellow and green aspen trees and snowy peaks make for a dramatic setting. The peak of the foliage is not an exact science and different valleys turn at different times but it generally happens somewhere between September 15th and October 7th. View Gallery >>

Winter:

You shouldn't live in Crested Butte if you don't like winter. Winter generally starts in late October, early November when we start seeing snow on the peaks and we start waxing up the skis and dream of some early season nordic skiing. From November through April we generally receive about 300 inches of snow. While the temperatures drop pretty low in winter there are also lots of bright sunny days. The winter sun keeps us warm and our spirits high. In short, lots of snow and lots of warm sunshine. That's what makes a Colorado winter so spectacular. Winter holds strong until we start melting out in April/May. View Gallery >>

Spring:

Spring a mixed bag of weather with incredible sunny warm days mixed with the occasional cold and snowy day. It's a great time to start mountain biking the incredible desert trails in Gunnison, hike the low valley trails looking for pasque flowers, glacier lilies and butterflies or ski the snowy peaks. Spring is one of our favorite seasons because it is so quiet and peaceful. It is the season of the three sport day when we can go backcountry skiing in the morning, mountain bike in Gunnison in the afternoon and play some golf or fly fish on the lush, green valley floors at sundown.
